We will make our way to the old town of Rabat, a place that claims the origins of Maltese Christianity. We will explore the story of the Romans in Malta and the visit of St. Paul in 60 AD after shipwrecking on the islands, as we make our way through the streets of a truly lively, typical Maltese town. The walking tour proceeds to the medieval fortified city of Mdina, which is just a stone’s throw away from Rabat. The city's old Baroque buildings, Cathedral and magnificent bastion walls dominate the rural skyline. Mdina, once the capital of Malta until the modern city of Valletta was built in 1566 has had many names including Melite (Roman occupation), Medina (Arabic occupation), Citta Notabile (Knights of St. John) and Citta Vecchia (after Valletta was built). Today it is also referred to as the Silent City since it inspires tranquillity at any time of the day or night. The only way to really experience and enjoy this city is on foot, explore the quaint alleys, narrow streets, ancient buildings and magnificent far reaching views from the high bastion walls.
We continue with our tour to the UNESCO Hagar Qim temple site and visitor's centre. Set in a rural area this ancient temple is particularly interesting as it has the largest and heaviest megaliths out of all the temple sites around the Maltese Islands, some slabs weighing a staggering 20 tons. We will delve into the history of this incredible culture dating back to 3600BC.
Our last stop is at Wied iz-Zurrieq where you can go on a short boat ride out to the impressive Blue Grotto. The sun's rays refract through the arch in the water creating a turquoise blue effect. One can also admire the orange and purple algae which developed just beneath the surface of the water all along the walls of the cave. At least 5 caves are visited on this 25-minute boat trip. (Boats operate weather permitting).
This tour starts at 0830hrs and is available daily.
