Half Day Tours with Tasting Experiences

Blue Grotto, Mdina Medieval City & Mosta with Lunch Like a Local
5 hours

Tour Description

The first stop of our tour is a visit to the Blue Grotto. This picturesque grotto and its neighbouring system of sea caverns mirror the brilliant phosphorescent colours of underwater flora. A boat trip ( optional) that takes you along the coast lasts around 25 minutes and it will allow you to explore these stunning grottoes and sea caverns... The boat trip is not included in the overall price as it operates subject to weather conditions, €10 per person paid on the day).

Onto the next stop, the tour will proceed to the medieval fortified city of Mdina, the city's old Baroque buildings, Cathedral and magnificent bastion walls dominate the rural skyline. Mdina, once the capital of Malta until the modern city of Valletta was built in 1566 has had many names including Melite (Roman occupation), Medina (Arabic occupation), Citta Notabile (Knights of St. John) and Citta Vecchia (after Valletta was built). Today it is also referred to as the Silent City since it inspires tranquillity at any time of the day or night. The only way to really experience and enjoy this city is on foot, explore the quaint alleys, narrow streets, ancient buildings and magnificent far reaching views from the high bastion walls.

Our final visit will include the Mosta Dome, which is one of Malta's most famous churches and most iconic buildings, the Mosta Basilica. Housing a spectacular unsupported dome, the Basilica is also popular with visitors as it was at this church where a World War II bomb pierced the dome, fell inside the church during a service and failed to explode, and thus being hailed by locals as a miracle.

We end our tour at a local restaurant in Mosta. Here you will enjoy a typical local lunch which includes local bread with a tomato spread ‘Kunserva’, drizzled with olive oil, Ftira, filled with Tuna flakes. Timpana, which is baked macaroni in pastry. Pastizzi, filo parcels filled with ricotta cheese or peas. Bigilla, is a type of broad bean paste and ‘Galleti’ (water biscuits). Olives and Peppered Goats Cheese. Included is a glass of house wine or a soft drink. We end with two local sweets – village biscuits and Imqaret, which is a fried thin sweet pastry filled with a flavourful spiced date and citrusy paste. Tea or coffee is also included.
